The Jogging Mailman

“Man is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.”  °Morgan Freeman

The first time I noticed him is when I was probably waiting for something really good in the mail. It was winter and really cold. The winds were blowing, and I remember looking up the street in my pyjama’s trying to warm myself up under the carport. Then I noticed through the white shimmering haze and shadow of a man jogging down the street. He was running door to door with a sack on his side and mail in his hands… and I thought to myself “I would be running too in this cold.. He has a long road ahead!”

The next day, while shovelling our driveways, neighbours and I looked on as the mail carrier came around, again jogging crazily through the freshly ploughed snow. As he was standing next to my mailbox on the fence, my dogs grew Mohawks on their backs, and were barking frantically. As my oldest dog growled, Mr. Mailperson just stood there, steady and strong, showing no fear while putting the mail in our box

Then I thought to myself “He’s pretty brave”!

Not in achievement, but in endurance, of the human soul, does it show its divine grandeur and its alliance with the infinite.

Days, months and seasons go by and everyday, there he is, jogging his route. Hot days, muggy days, rainy and cold days, snowy days, blizzard days, nice and sunshiny days. He just seems to exude mail delivery and the passion of his running always makes me conjure up stories on my mind on why he jogs? Aren’t we supposed to slow down in our life? Why is he rushing his job?

He never looks tired or worn out: thus, his endurance inspires me!!

Maybe just maybe:

He’s practicing for an Iron Man marathon;

He needs to finish early because he has another job to go to;

He wants to finish early because he wants more quality time with his family;

Or.. It’s a passion for running and just staying healthy?

Whatever his reason… I just love him! (Not in that way but you know what I mean)

I don’t know why I had a calling this morning (it’s been on my mind for a long time) to finally write about the Jogging Mailman as we call him in our town now (my nickname BTW) However, I just feel inspired every time I see him. Every.. Single time..
