The Reign of the Lioness and Mother’s Intuition

Sunday, many of us will be celebrating Mother’s Day.  This week, Muse In The Valley’s theme is on Motherhood.  All the wonderful, amazing,  loving, beautiful, frustrating and heartbreaking feelings which come with Mothering our offspring.   In my post:  Mother’s Fantacy:  Debunking Myths, I spoke about how my preconceived ideas about parenting really changed once my children came into the world.   The one thing I was not ready for was the constant “wearing my heart on my sleeve” feeling.  The part which amazes me the most so far is:  the Mother Lioness!

She is a complete separate entity.  She’s the one who would jump out in front of a bullet to protect her children.  Mother Lioness roars and fights for her kids, she surprised me to much the first time she came out, that I had to literally sit for a while to hold her back.  She is fierce, protective and instinctive.  She was born the day my children were born. She’s the one who fought for my son when he was diagnosed with ADHD and bullied at school.  She was the one who made sure my daughter was well taken care of in the hospital when she had a pneumonia.  She’s the one who roars when her children are threatened.

For absolutely no one else has Mother Lioness come out.. no one else but her children.

I witnessed Mother Lioness in more ways than one, and not only in myself.  I remember the day my best friend and I were at the park with our children.  She was happily swinging her 5 month old baby in the baby swing.  The day was bright and the kids were just finishing their picnic, when out of the blue, I saw my friend pull her baby from out of the air!  As soon as it happened she asked me to grab her infant so she could sit down.  She was obviously shaken after the event, however, she told me she was focused when she caught her child.

What happened is baby Anna had somehow pushed herself backwards and the swing tipped over, in one split second,  Caroline had her by the pants!  It was a momma miracle!   After she had calmed down, we both tried to recreate the event using a teddy bear, and neither of us were able to grab the stuffed animal out of the air after it tipped over out of the swing!   Mother Lioness is perceptive and instinctual.  It was almost like Caroline had known a second before the incident and was literally prepared in advance to grab her daughter in mid-air.

Call it instinct or intuition, whatever it is, it’s real!

Take for instant the time I was pregnant with my son, I was walking on the sidewalk with his father, when I tripped and fell.  The thing is, that although my ex recounts that I fell in 3 seconds flat!  In my mind, the fall lasted at least 30 seconds or more, thus, during the fall I had time to think, turn to my side to avoid falling on my stomach.  I fell on my side with my arm protecting my baby belly!  I was ok, and so was the baby.

How bout the times when I knew my children needed to get to the emergency despite other’s saying “No she’ll be ok.. it’s just a cough” or “He’s fine, his fever will go down, keep him home”.  Both times, my kids needed medical help immediately.  Mother’s intuition is strong and I will never EVER deny it.

What makes moms go above and beyond?  What makes a mother protect her child?  Is it love? Animal Instinct of Mother’s Intuition? I do not know, and to be truthful, I just spent an hour googling about it and the only article I found is how Mom’s protective instincts may be related to low levels of Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), in the brain.  In Scientific American, Sarah Graham observes:

Differing CRH levels did not affect any other mothering instincts, such as nursing, however. A link between CRH and caring behavior in mothers could also help explain situations in which women don’t safeguard their children. If CRH needs to be low to see maternal protection of offspring, as our work suggests,Gammie remarks, then it explains why moms with high postpartum depression and high CRH not only may neglect, but also may abuse, their children. The findings appear in the August issue of Behavioral Neuroscience.

This may be a scientific explanation, however, I think many of us have experienced this instinct more than once, and probably often asked ourselves  “Did I do that?” right after you spent 14 hours awake taking care of your sick child !  I do not know why I cannot find more Science or Psychology on the subject on the web.. Maybe I am not looking in the right places, however, what I know for sure is that I would do absolutely ANYTHING for my children if they were in danger, or sick, or heartbroken, and that includes hunting down anyone who would deliberately hurt my child (lord knows what I would do once I find them).

What I understand about the Lioness in me, is that she comes out only for my children and no one else.  Not even myself!  Yet, now, I am learning to embrace Lioness and have her come to me when I need her too… I mean, with this self-love thing going on, I deserve a dose of Lioness love too!

Has the Lioness come out in you?  Please share your stories with me in the comment section!

Happy Mother’s Day

Nightly Encounters of the Divine Kind – by Sherrie Dillard

Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back: a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country.

Nightly Encounters of the Divine Kind

I love a good dream. I feel myself blessed when my dreams have yielded important insights, comfort, exciting adventure or wise and kind company. My dreams seem to be born from different parts of me. Some of them I easily identify as stress and worry dreams. These often involve losing my car keys, giving away my dogs, being lost in a strange place and my teeth falling out. Although they alert me to areas in my life that I need to work on, these are not my most favorite type of dreams.

I often dream about the people in my life. Sometimes they are clients of mine and we are still working on issues. Frequently I dream of my family and friends. When I am able to decipher the accompanying strange, interesting or funny imagery, I understand myself, others and situations so much better.  Sometimes my dreams have no discernible characters or events and I cannot comprehend what they might be trying to tell me. When this happens I let the dream take its time to soak into my heart and mind without rushing to dissect it.

My favorite kind of dream is what I like to think of as a spiritual encounter. In these dreams I am in the presence of wise and loving beings that often come to me with a message or gift of love, guidance or direction. These dreams can be transformative. I feel an influx of new energy, awareness and a sense of renewal.

I recently had one such dream. In it a woman came to me and told me to follow her. We got onto an elevator and it shot upward at breakneck speed. Suddenly the doors opened and an Asian man who I intuitively knew to be a Buddhist handed me a yellow hat. The doors to the elevator then abruptly shut and we started to descend. As it did I admired the hat’s beauty. It was made of woven material and had jeweled designs embroidered all through it. It was a beautiful gift. Then, I woke up.

I knew the dream was significant, but I did not know why. The next day as I was walking my dog I thought about the dream. I intuitively knew that the dream was important, but I did not know why.  I did however hear an inner voice telling me to go home and goggle Buddhist and yellow hat. I thought this was silly, but I did it. As I was typing in Buddhist and yellow hat onto my search button, several sites quickly appeared.  I clicked on one and saw a picture of a yellow hat, surprisingly similar to the one in my dream. Reading the information on the site, I learned that there is a Yellow Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhists and that this is the sect that the Dali Lama belongs to. There is a long history and tradition which explains the Yellow Hat sect that I will not go into, but to be given this hat in my dream was clearly an honor.  Not one that I completely understood. But, this is how these dream encounters often are. They inspire and wake you to new perspectives and possibilities. Not simply mental activity, they are more like a passage through which we transform.

In my book The Miracle Workers Handbook: Seven Levels of Power and Manifestation of the Virgin Mary, that has just been released, I talk about the importance of these nightly encounters. One of the ways that we are spiritually guided, receive direction and help is through our dreams. Angels, Mary, and other spiritual beings and teachers come to us while we sleep. When the curtain of consciousness slips away at night, we are more able to allow and receive visits from the spiritual realm. It is interesting that I had this dream at the time that my book about the Virgin Mary was being released. My unconscious clearly was not dwelling on Buddhist thoughts. In this way the dream was a special treat to me because it spoke to the oneness of all religions and spiritual traditions. Although I know some of the basics of Buddhist philosophy, I do not know much of their practices and traditions. This dream transcended the parameters of my spiritual preferences and offered me a drop of pure spiritual juice.

Most spiritual traditions, the Bible included are full of instances and examples of holy visitations taking place through dreams. Battles have been fought. People have left their homes, wed unlikely partners, journeyed to distant places and changed the course of their lives because of the guidance that they received through their dreams.

Whatever you believe in, whatever is powerful, loving and wise, invite it into your dreams. It might change your life.

Tornadoes, Elevators and Daniel Craig? Go!

Introducing Julie Seibert, the owner of Reawaken Your Brilliance    a Web TV Radio/Talk show available online.  You must check her out.  She came to me with a dream last month really thinking she was crazy! However, most dreams do not make sense until we really look at them. I invite you to take a look.

The Dream

Last night I dreamt that I was in Miami (never have been, knew that was where I was). Was with a younger man. Liked him, but I was much older, We were at his condo. We are walking down and there is an area where you can eat that is glass right against the ocean. I see the waves are starting to look menacing. We go up towards the elevator. My intutiion says dont go. I can see a twister forming in the ocean. We punch #s and go up and up and all the way to the top which isn’t where he lives and then suddenly start going down and stopping. I think I am going to die, get stuck (I have a fear of enclosed places. When I am very stressed I don;t like being trapped in elevators, etc.). We go down very fast and I see water leaking in the elevator. I think we are being swallowed by ocean.

We get out of the elevator and the waves are coming after us. My friend is worried about me–he thinks I’m going to die, but for some strange reason I know even though I am about to get pummeled I am going to be okay. So, get gulped up by the water and am okay. Then I see that twister again. And the guy is like what is a twister and I am like that thing and point to it….It then starts to come towards us, so we run by the elevator and hide from it. It is like a person–looking for us and does a little dance until it finds me and starts to come after me and then I wake up.

Now, what is interesting is that the night before I had this dream and I am with Daniel Craig. We are in a room and I say hold my hand I’m scared. He does and is very gentle with me. He is filming an independent movie and we have become close. Some movie stuff and then we are hiding from others. Then the next thing we remember we are rock climbing and I get stuck on this area. The only way I can see is up and I am afraid. And stuck. But then all of sudden he shows me how to get around. I can climb down towards him and get around the tall rock.

Yesterday, I went to the bank about refi as I need to. The guy had coloring like Daniel, so I thought that was help from my guardian angel., But, in the dream I really thought Daniel represented my soulmate. And it was a message, he is coming and he will help you–just feel very alone now, wanting someone.

What I thought was interesting was this feeling of hope the night before and then last night, this dream. I should also add I have been depressed for about two weeks–but it is like a fog that desended upon me and is starting to lift./ Have been depressed in the past, but for the most part have worked through that, so this was very surprising.

The Interpretation

I believe, as does Carl Jung, dreams are a mirror of our subconscious  mind thus, mirror what we go through no matter how crazy the dreams seem.  The symbols in the dream are usually what they mean to you. I rarely go to a book, but will on occasion research for reference.  Also, there are also “roles” in your dreams.  The Id, The Ego and The Superego.  Those 3 roles often represent a part of you.

The id:  The child – wishes, desires, playfull and sometimes seem spoiled.
The Ego:  yourself in the dream
The Superego:  Parental, morality, judgement etc.

Recurring Dream from my Childhood by Caleb Lin

I often refer to my intuition and to similar dreams I have had or interpreted in the past. All this put together is called mapping.  I map out your dream, with all the symbols, meanings, roles etc.. and then to put them together like a puzzle. So here it goes.

I am going to start with the Daniel Craig dream since it came first.

You tell me that Daniel Craig represents your Soulmate to you. I have no doubt in my mind that he does.  However, I also think he represents a part of you which is NOT the id or ego, but the Protector.  I had someone have a very similar dream about a celeb (see dream here) whom she believes is her soul mate.  This soul mate is there to tell you that you can have all these qualities that you love in this person in yourself.  You have taken yourself to the bank, and asked for refinance and I think your intuition is dead on where you know you  will get the help needed but maybe not in the way that may be obvious.

You see with Daniel you ask for help!! You ask him to hold your hand.  Yet you say you are hiding from others and that he’s filming an independent movie!  Which makes me wonder Julie, are you hiding this refi thing from some friends or some family?  If this refi doesn’t work out.. Have you thought of asking for help?  Do you see that language.. INDEPENDENT .. Daniel totally represents that independent /self-employed person.  So keep an open mind when it comes to asking for help from outside sources!

I know too well this feeling of climbing then feeling stuck.  I love that all you could see is up (prayers) and then get help to come down (answer to prayers) You had faith in Daniel and he guided you down.  Have faith in yourself, others and the Universe.  They will also guide you down, so that you can finally feel grounded.

Dream 2

It is obvious both dreams are connected.  Like I said in our email exchange, both involve men, feeling stuck and help.  I also see a common theme of getting up or down or away from something.  Your depression and anxiety are represented by the bad weather and the tornado.  In my life, anxiety is often represented by storms and tornadoes in my dreams.  So since you’ve been feeling the veil slowly coming off in waking life, the gentle Daniel Craig dream shows this.

Starting off in sunny Miami is a great way to start a dream.  Although you only can know what significance Miami is to you!  To me it’s a familiar and popular vacation spot and wher many flock to visit during the winter.  I also think of CSI or MIAMI vice when I think of Miami.. So ask youself what Miami means to you.

You are with a younger guy, who again represents a part of you, but this time NOT the protector.. I think he’s the ID.  The younger side of you.  This guy is attentive but not as attentive as Daniel.  In this dream you bypass your instincts by going to towards the glass restaurant.. I had to look this one up.. Rooms surrounded by glass may mean you are putting an invisible barrier around you.. (could be that veil) or it could mean you need clarity or a combo of both.

What I see here in all that chaos.. Going up then down fast.. Waves tornadoes, feeling stuck.. Etc.. This is your anxiety. The thing you fear is chasing you.  What is that fear?  What is it you need to acknowledge in your life right now?  Could it be fearing the loss of control if you lose your house?  Or something in that manner?  Again, do you need to ASK for help here Julie in this situation?

Is seems to me that you are in great distress at this part of your dream.. Which leads me to believe that this is affecting you in your daily life right now.. Feeling stuck, choked, can’t breathe!

The fact that you come around in your dream and KNOW you are going to be ok.. Is self-comforting.  Because, truthfully, you know deep down that no matter what happens .. Everything IS going to be ok.  You have that tool at your disposal.

THE ELEVATOR:  Going up the elevator may represent your success and how you feel you’ve accomplished in life, going down can represent feeling grounded.. Coming down for awhile to assess the situation you are in.

Have you been contemplating a change in the way you do your show?  Have you been looking for new sources of income?

The fact the tornadoish person is chasing you at the end of your dream leads me to believe that maybe, you are hard on youself.  I think that particular tornado is like a bully!  Trying to put you down.. You know all that negative self talk we do? ..

In conclusion, I think both dreams are connected, that you have listened to your wise self / soul mate Daniel Craig.  You may need to reassess your situation with the refi (have a plan B) if it doesn’t work out.

Continue to be kind, loving and gentle with yourself.  Be Daniel Craig.. Hold your own hand and go!

A “Shout Out” from Julie Seibert

I have to give a huge shout out to Kim Larocque for an amazing dream reading/interpretation. Right off the bat she noticed patterns of what my dreams were trying to tell me. She then asked what certain symbols meant for me before giving me my final analysis! I was BLOWN AWAY. I have been hiding needing a refinancing of my home (I’m embarrassed) and was afraid to ask for help…She nailed that, among other things. What I really appreciated was her encouragement and gentle way of explaining what the dream was about and what I needed to pay attention to….

Is Jaywalking bypassing your intuition?

Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way.  ~Florence Scovel Shinn

The other day I was buying something online for my daughter.  She really REALLY wanted this sweater and since she needs a new sweater I decided to get it for her.  We finally found the one she wanted, however, something in my stomach was telling me “mmm.. Check this out first” .  I ignored the feeling and proceeded to check out.  The order went through ok, however, the day after I realized I paid by echeck (which means the money comes directly out of your account not out of the Paypal acct) .  Thank God I did the double take and was able to transfer the PP money into my bank on time, because I would be in big trouble right now with everyone (bank, paypal and the vendor).

Last week I was watching OWN, and Oprah was doing an episode on  “Trusting Your Intuition”.  In September Jennifer Shelton from Femcentral posted “Whats a “gut” and how do I listen to it?”

It is no coincidence those things are coming to me when I am questioning my intuition.  I get mad at myself when I ignore it, and KNOW, just KNOW when I’m doing it.  When I experience my intuition,  I get a pinch inside my stomach (for when I “should” take another path). That pinch goes right to my brain and sends an alarm:  “NO NO NO – Stop – Double Check – Not Good!!”  When I am making the choice that is right for me, the feeling is totally different.

My question is:  If my gut is speaking to me, why do I choose to ignore it?   I can probably come up with all kinds of answers, however, the whys are not important.  What is important is that I see, hear and feel!   So, like an athlete, I am in training!  Lets move on to practice.

I created a system for myself to remind me of the “red flags”.  First, with my therapist, we decided that I should put Stop signs around my house to remind me, during my vulnerable stages, what is important:  ME!!  Moreover, I must remember to set boundaries and stick to them.  There will come a time, during this process, that I may become weak.  These stop signs will serve as reminders to not open the door to things that may, in the end, be a detriment to my healing.

Second,  while I was walking across the street here.  I noticed that often, I was jaywalking. So lets say “jaywalking” is ignoring my gut.   I also noticed that often, almost everyone around here jaywalks! (so everyone ignores their gut? No.. but for the purpose of this excercise YES!)   Jaywalking, in this instance, represents taking a chance every time one ignores the stop sign and crosses the street.  So this is my plan.  When I want to cross the street, I press on the little hand to activate the cross walk.  Although it takes a long time for the little walking man to show up, I wait until its safe.  Thus, the hand telling me to stop is my “gut instinct” to stop.  The little man telling me to walk “is my gut instinct to go with it”!

This visual exercise is really helping me tap into “the stop and go” of instinct.  It is also teaching me patience, and being good to myself.  I mean, if I cross that street too early, I could get hit by a car.  If I wait, I am making a wise choice.  I still look both ways before I cross, but know that the path is cleared and its my turn!

As for my daughter’s sweater, in  the end, the money cleared and there is no harm done… Yet I can’t wait to receive my daughter’s sweater to make this whole transaction A.. OK!!!

What signs do you look for?  What practices do you do in order to trust your gut?
