Recurring Dreams
Carl Jung believed recurring dreams “show up repeatedly to demand attention, suggesting that the dreamer is neglecting an issue related to the dream. He believed that many of the symbols or images from these dreams return with each dream.” (WIKI) Also, dreams.ca agree: “research has shown that most recurring dreams are described as being unpleasant. Furthermore, many dream theories converge in their view that this type of experience is associated with lack of progress by the dreamer to recognize and solve related conflicts in life.”
In my experience, most of my recurring dreams disappeared as soon as I was able to pinpoint the message, and pay attention to it in my life when awake. This is not always an easy task. Some recurring dreams were only solved by therapy OR a long day of writing down the dreams and figuring out what the symbols represent to me.
Do you pay attention to your recurring dreams? Do they haunt you?
Find beauty not only in the thing itself but in the pattern of the shadows, the light and dark which that thing provides. ~Junichiro Tanizaki
Kim Turstin came to me via my Facebook Page a few weeks ago when I was posting quotes on the subject of recurring dreams. These dreams took me 1 week to interpret as I knew they dug very deep and I had to be very cautious.
Look at Kim’s dreams below, these dreams have haunted her all of her life, and still to this day. We will see in the future, if my interpretation has helped solve her puzzle, but for now, take a look at these ghostly dreams:
The Dreams
My dream since I was a child always takes place in my Great Aunt’s house-although I am usually never on the main living floors I guess I feel or know it is the same house. I am in the attic which looks nothing like her real attic. It is a typical barebones attic. It is always dusty & has furniture which is used but we (there are others with me but no one known to me) leave it dirty looking so no one will find us. Behind the exposed brick wall is a small space to get behind the wall & that is where we hide.
One time I dreamt I was a ghost in the house & could fly through the rooms but I couldn’t fly through walls. Occasionally I will venture downstairs in my dream to the porch which leads not to her yard but to a field with a creek & I always feel danger. It always seems to be night in these dreams.
In reality I must admit I did refer to her house as the Mausoleum because it was spooky. There were front & rear stairs & a stuffed owl on the newel post. Heavy curtains & oriental rugs with dim lights. When I was little it was heated with coal. The bathroom was on the second floor back a long, narrow, dark hall & we had to pass the empty bedrooms to get there. In one room you could see a wooden rocking chair & my sister & I always swore it would move. Now the basement wasn’t spooky at all. First, the basement was above ground for the most part & had good light coming in from the windows & had a lighter feeling than the upstairs.
I also had a recurring dream when I was little that my parents would take me for a ride in the country & leave me in a huge pothole. Again night & I couldn’t get out.
The Interpretation
If you look at a house, there is often 3 floors, the attic, the main floor and the basement. This is the kind of house that is in your dream. Think of the house as your soul.. your spirit where you reside. Also, if you are thinking your house like a mausoleum, then this is old thinking, the way you “used to think” So if you see of this house as a part of you, you can think of it this way:
Attic: This where you have repressed memories, since everything is dusty and stale up there in your dream, I think there are some repressed memories you need to look deeper into. Dust them off, bring them to light, because your dreams are telling you: LOOK AT ME!!!
We also spoke about “leave it dirty so no one will find us” This is a very IMPORTANT statement. Something covered up and dirty.. no one wants. However, you must clean up whatever it is that is bothering you, and YOU must really look at it and decide whether forgiveness is needed, or compassion, understanding or love or all 4!!
The main floor (where you fly to) is the “normal space” where “common areas” usually are. So, you fly down there to seek freedom from the dusty stale attic we will call your “memories, and your old hurts” However, you fly as a “ghost” so again, you cannot be “seen nor heard” this refers to what you discussed with me in our emails. Again, something important to look at.. are you still carrying this? Trying to stay quiet in order not to offend anyone?
This house, represents “darkness” and if it is still coming up, there is “darkness” somewhere inside you that must be healed. Your soul cannot stay dark for long, because your dreams are telling you to LOOK, and bring in light. This darkness is not evil, its the normal day to day depression, low self-esteems, it could be fear of speaking, but I feel it is also something long within you that you are carrying… I know we have discussed this, so I would suggest journaling or going back… to really look at what started these dreams.
The flying, means a need for escape and freedom from a place of restriction, but you always feel danger. What did you carry with you that made you so scared? Not being able to fly through the walls brings to mind “Hitting a brick wall” I think whatever it is you want to change and let go of in your life, you are struggling with it.
The basement
The basement usually represents our unconscious just like the bottom of an iceberg. Whatever lies there now in you is light and love. This is what we usually strive for. Usually, in dream interpretations, the basement can be a scary place, but NO not for you. So, to get through the main floor and the attic in your life, you must deal with what is unconscious, by bringing it to consciousness and being aware of what you are feeling..
I suggest journaling Kim, and please send me follow-up dreams. I really want to help you in ridding yourself of these recurring dreams. No need for them to harm or bug you anymore.
Keep a dream journal, and a day journal, and see your whole life change!
Kim Turstin’s Response
I say it sounds fairly accurate & I do have buried issues that I need to deal with. I know my parents did the best they could with the abilities they had so I try to do better than they did but still know my children will have issues also-don’t we all? Since my children do not have my fears & doubts I think they may be ok-Lord knows they aren’t shy or quiet 🙂 They are willing to join groups at school without any of their friends joining also & my oldest signed up for debate. I would have died right on the spot if I had to do public speaking. I am going to try to journal my dreams & see where that goes. Thanks for all your help.

I truly feel Kim is haunted by these dreams. Is there a force to reckoned with? I do not know. Are there guides/spirits sending her messages? Maybe, however, I strongly recommend to Kim to keep tabs and look deeply at what her dreams are trying to tell her.
Would be happy to hear what you think?

I think you did a great job of interpreting this Kim.
I don’t see any indication of a higher message or spirits coming into this dream and I would guess that you have this dream, Kim, when a certain situation pops up in your life. Once you figure out what it means the dream will actually become a pleasant reminder.
